Connecting Communities – Linking the Past and Future
The Brian Boru Bridge, officially opened on 22 May 2025, marks a significant milestone in the development of infrastructure along the River Shannon. Spanning the waterway between Killaloe, County Clare, and Ballina, County Tipperary, this state-of-the-art crossing serves as a vital link for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
A Bridge for the 21st Century
Designed to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the historic twin towns, the Brian Boru Bridge provides a modern alternative to the 18th-century Killaloe Bridge, which has long struggled to accommodate the growing demands of local and regional traffic. The new bridge ensures smoother, safer travel while preserving the unique character and heritage of the original structure.
Planning and Construction
The project has been in development for over two decades, reflecting a collaborative vision between Clare County Council, Tipperary County Council, Transport Infrastructure Ireland, and community stakeholders. Following an extensive public consultation process, environmental assessments, and rigorous planning procedures, construction commenced in 2021.
Delivered by Sisk, the bridge and associated bypass routes represent a major investment in regional transport infrastructure. The construction phase was carried out with care and precision, mindful of the area’s ecological sensitivities and cultural significance.
Honouring Our Heritage
The bridge is named in honour of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, who was born near Killaloe over a thousand years ago. His legacy as a unifier of Ireland and a visionary leader is reflected in the bridge’s symbolic role as a connector of people, places, and possibilities.
Benefits for the Community
